I don't know who/or how many write for Wikipedia ...but, this one surprised me, summarizing the award winning children's story as such:
"The book is known for its sadistic and dastardly (yet true to life) portrayal of parasitic relationships so commonly found in humanity."
That seems like a rather harsh assessment itself ...to a lighthearted and entertaining children's story. Perhaps I should put us all on equal ground here ...and list the text:
If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk.
When you give him the milk, he'll probably ask you for a straw.
When he's finished, he'll ask you for a napkin.
Then he'll want to look in a mirror to make sure he doesn't have a milk mustache.
When he looks in the mirror, he might notice his hair needs a trim. So he'll probably ask for a pair of nail scissors.
When he's finished giving himself a trim, he'll want a broom to sweep it up.
He'll start sweeping. He might get carried away and sweep every room in the house. He may even end up washing the floors as well!
When he's done, he'll probably want to take a nap.
You'll have to fix up a little box for him with a blanket and a pillow.
He'll crawl in, make himself comfortable and fluff the pillow a few times. He'll probably ask you to read him a story.
So you'll read to him from one of your books, and he'll ask to see the pictures.
When he looks at the pictures, he'll get so excited he'll want to draw one of his own.
He'll ask for paper and crayons. He'll draw a picture. When the picture is finished, he'll want to sign his name with a pen.
Then he'll want to hang his picture on your refrigerator. Which means he'll need Scotch tape.
He'll hang up his drawing and stand back to look at it. Looking at the refrigerator will remind him that he's thirsty. So... he'll ask for a glass of milk.
And chances are if he asks you for a glass of milk, he's going to want a cookie to go with it.
Other variations that caught my eye on the internet, are as follows:
"If You Give a Liberal the Oval Office ..."

"If You Give a Liberal the Oval Office ..."
"If You Give a Democrat a Cookie ..."
"If You Cut Off the Mouse's Cookie Supply ..."
We can create our own ...according to our political bent.
"If You Give a Republican a Batch of Cookies ..."
Many people look at themselves and those around them as 'cookies'. They take someone else's dough and add things to sweeten the package or make life colorful. They believe there is an unlimited supply of cookies, because someone else is making them. Their mind sort of works in reverse. So, ...
If You Give a 'Cookie' a Democrat ...they feel like everything will be okay ...
Everything will be okay because God's Word is in the Bible ...and the Bible tells us to submit to government.
And if government tells us it's okay, then it's okay ...it excuses us from what we know God is not in favor of.
If we are excused by government, then we can do pretty much what we want ...because as a Democrat we can count on government to support us.
If government is going to support us ...they are going to make us feel better.
If they are going to make us feel better, then they can do that by changing the laws of God, minimizing our conflict of conscious, and only mentioning God in a general sense to add flavor to speeches.
Okay, that's enough for now ...
(Author's note: And by the way, I do not agree with the dialogue of those things being okay ...and by just excusing ourselves. We would be merely doing it in our own eyes ...not God's. And the Book of Judges clearly shows what happens when we do things in our own eyes.)
"If You Give a Louse a Wookie ..."
(If you resource the Urban Dictionary, you may get some rather different impressions of what words mean ...let's not go there.)
But, let's get some application here ...
