In voting, we realize we cannot have everything the way we want it. After all, we are a democracy of sorts, though by definition we are a republic.
But, in deciding how we vote, it becomes a mental exercise on how we shift our priorities ...back-and-forth, often not really knowing what we want, and even more so not knowing what others have to offer. And sadly, we do not value honesty as one of the top priorities. If we did, it may still be difficult to confidently determine what is honest ...but, we also prioritize those sources which we trust in determining that.
Like a Rock-Paper-Scissor mentality ...we may be rock solid on things like Climate Change issues. We say we are concerned that future generations have a chance to live as we have ...yet, we put those values on paper and write laws to protect, while using scissors to cut a baby up. If we want future generations of children to have a chance to live as we have, then we must allow them that chance to live.
It does seem to me to be a double standard to say that women's rights and climate change issues trump the here and now destruction of alive fetuses. Yet, there are religious groups who are very lacking in women's rights ...so, those women's rights are trumped by religious rights. My mind does not follow, nor approve of this logic ...yet, I do see that it exists.
Also, one of the most important functions and responsibilities of society rests within the family. What has come of that??
That seems to follow the logic of "If you give a _____ a cookie ..."
If you give ground on the family & are tolerant to all lifestyles, then even incest will seem okay.
If any form of lifestyle is okay, then any form of religion that dictates a lifestyle is okay.
If any form of religion (including no religion) is okay, then our current laws must be changed.
If personal rights, whether women's, men's, or religious ...trumps group rights, then we have a problem.
The problem we have, is that we pretend to be a democracy ...yet, we are approaching an anarchy mentality.
With an anarchy mentality of everyone doing what they feel is in their right to do ...inevitably somewhere it will infringe upon another's rights.
If we allow Sharia and child bribes in those religions which claim to be within their own law, then we also have no legal ground against polygamy or other laws which for years we have upheld.
If you accept one religion's view on marriage, then other forms of criminal and reprobate thinking will also challenge their lack of acceptance and claim discrimination.
If they claim discrimination it will cost a lot of dough in the courts.
And if we run out of dough, we won't be able to have any more cookies ...
